Individual Lessons

One hour private lessons are conducted in our home to allow us full access to our printed and electronic resources.  Each student's chess goals are accessed and we create an individualized program to help achieve those goals.  We focus on laying the groundwork for in-depth understanding and long-term chess success.  Typical lesson includes drills, game analysis, skills, and theory.  Beginning students are taught by Britta Wolfe and students rated over 1000 are taught by Jeff Wolfe.

Private lessons with Britta Wolfe - $40 per hour
Private lessons with Jeff Wolfe - $60 per hour

 After School Program

West End Chess offers a fun and engaging Beginning Chess after school program.  Students are taught the basics of chess in a manner that prepares them for the possibility of future tournament play.  Though we have flexibility in the length of the program, our typical Beginning Chess class is structured as follows:

Day 1 -The Chess Board; Ranks & Files; Piece Name, Value, and Movement
Day 2 - Piece Movement Exercises; Check, Checkmate and Stalemate
Day 3 - Opening Principles; Advanced Rules; Four Ways to Attack
Day 4 - King/Rook Checkmate; Avoiding Traps
Day 5 - King/Queen Checkmate; Putting it all Together
Day 6 - Skills assessment

Lessons are two hours long and can be held directly after school or in the evening.  There is a  minimum of 16 students.  The registration fee includes a workbook and a starter chess set combo that includes a tournament board, pieces and a carrying bag.  All Beginning Chess lessons are taught by Britta Wolfe.

After School Program - $85 per student

  Team Coaching

Coaching scholastic chess teams is Coach Britta Wolfe's specialty.  She prepares students and parents for tournament success!

Parent organizers are typically responsible for managing the business side of the team (scheduling, finding facilities, ordering team shirts, managing finances, supervising student arrival and dismissal, purchasing and storing team supplies) while Coach Wolfe offers her council for the most efficient ways to undertake these activities.

Coach Wolfe provides instruction to the team and directs them in paired play.  As Coach Wolfe gets to know the players and their ability levels she divides them into groups and offers specialized instruction on the skills that group needs to develop.  She also gives advice to both parents and students about which tournaments to attend and when to "play up" in a tournament.  She monitors the tournament progress of all team members and teaches them skills to improve their tournament performance.

Parent organizers decide how often they would like Coach Wolfe to attend and run the team's meetings.  It is not necessary for her to be with the team every hour they meet, though frequent contact time improves her ability to get to know the individual students and their needs.
